We manufacture X-ray protective observation windows to give full protection to the total structural opening based on the energy emitted by the X-ray or Gamma source. The structure and shielding composition of the surrounding walls together with the work procedures of each specific room are also taken into consideration.

Hammersmith Hospital, London
We installed a 22mm lead observation window (pictured). The three sections are joined by protected mullions and sit in an overall leaded frame 3000mm x 1000mm. Even though the window consists of multiple layers of lead glass it retains excellent clarity. A similar window thickness is illustrated in the adjacent 22mm lead lined door.
Construction
TopWindow frames have a similar construction to those used for doors and are offered in a selection of hardwoods for paint or sealed finish and in profiles to match other frames.
Frames are produced with any thickness of lead lining. The most popular being Code 3 (1.32mm) and Code 5 (2.24mm).
Lead glass is available from stock in a selection of thicknesses. We are pleased to manufacture windows in any size. However, in view of the high cost of lead glass we are listing glass sizes available from our bulk stocks offering the minimum amount of wastage.
Multiple windows can be produced with leaded 'H' bars at the glass joints or frames divided by leaded timber mullions, as shown in the images above.
Non-standard sizes are available to special order. Please contact our sales office for further information.

Lead Glass
TopThe use of a specially designed wall saw enables us to cut x-ray shielded glass from large bulk stocks in 4 thicknesses giving lead equivalents between 1.5mm Pb to 3.2mm Pb. These are available up to a maximum sheet size of 2000mm x 1000mm but please refer to our table below for weights.
The introduction of the wall saw has resulted in a dramatic increase in productivity. This gives significant cost savings to the customer and allows extremely fast deliveries on a worldwide basis.
The table illustrates physical thicknesses, the lead equivalent and weight of glass held in stock.
If you are ordering glass for an area with code 5 (2.24mm Pb) lead protection, check with your Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA) that lead glass 7/8.5mm (2.0mm Pb) is sufficient. This would be a cost effective solution if acceptable to the RPA.
To avoid the risk of breakage and injury during handling and installation, please note the overall weight of each piece of glass specified. Leaded ‘H’ bars or leaded timber mullions can be introduced to keep windows sizes to acceptable weights.
